Machida unwilling to wait for title match

Wednesday, March 27th, 2013

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship or the UFC Light Heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida is in a really precarious position. Although he is sure to be handed a shot to the title, the Brazilian is also not ready to sit out for the next six months, waiting for that title shot to take place. Machida earned the position as the number one contender for the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship currently held by Jon Jones after he got the better of Dan Henderson at UFC 157.

The Dragon will now be watching very carefully when Jones puts his title on the line against Chael Sonnen at the end of April. The only real problem is the Brazilian doesn’t want to sit out of action for a long time, with the rust of inaction taking shape in his body, but precariously, there is no top level contender in the Light Heavyweight division of the UFC that the promotion can pair him up against in a non-title bout. Speaking about the situation, Ed Soares, the manager of Lyoto Machida stated that there is no one in the top 10 in the division who is free at the moment.

Soares went on to state Machida is the number on contender but his unwillingness to sit out for the next few months means the UFC will have to find him an opponent to keep him busy. He mentioned that although the Jones v/s Sonnen bout is scheduled for next month, it is still a long time before the winner is ready to fight again.

He also raised the question as to what might happen if one was to get injured. What would that mean for Lyoto Machida? It is a difficult situation and Dana White, the UFC president has his work cut out to find a solution.
