Lyoto Machida v/s Dan Henderson set for UFC 157

Tuesday, January 15th, 2013

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship or the UFC Light Heavyweight champions Dan Henderson and Lyoto Machida are set to go head to head against each other in the co-main event of UFC 157, which is scheduled to take place on the 23rd of February in Anaheim, California, according to an announcement made by the officials of the promotion. It is also being believed that the winner of the match would go on to earn for himself a shot at the 205 lbs division title, currently held by Brazilian Jon Jones, who will take on Chael Sonnen in April at the finale of The Ultimate Fighter.

Henderson, whose Mixed Martial Arts record reads 29-8, was scheduled to take on the champion Jones at the UFC 151 pay per view event back in September. But after an injury forced him to withdraw from the match, the UFC officials offered Lyoto Machida the chance to fight for the title. However, the Dragon declined the offer, stating that he wouldn’t take on Jones at such short notice, leading to the cancellation of the event, resulting in both the fighters falling down the pecking order.

Henderson, who has held the Light Heavyweight Championship belt both at PRIDE as well as Strike Force and also the 170 lbs belt at PRIDE, was on a four match winning streak when he suffered the injury, and will definitely go into the match against Machida with the upper hand.

The Brazilian, on the other hand, was defeated unanimously by his fellow Brazilian Jones at UFC 140 as he surrendered his title but he bounced back with a thumping win over Ryan Bader to get himself back into the picture for the title. But with Henderson awaiting him, Lyoto Machida might just have to wait a bit longer for a title shot.
